How to Identify Subterranean Termites

Subterranean termites are so secretive about their activities that some houses show evident damage before signs can be detected. However, there are several important early warning signs, too. Mud tubes-thin tunnels of dirt-like material that termites build themselves to travel from their underground nests to food sources-are one very common sign. These generally appear on foundation walls, in crawl spaces, or along wooden beams.

Another indication is hollow-sounding wood. Because subterranean termites eat through the inside of wood, tapping on any area where they have eaten through might sound hollow or even create small holes from where they had to tunnel through.

You may see winged termites, also referred to as swarmers, inside or near your home in warm seasons. These are reproductives seeking a new location for their colony; thus, there must be an existing infestation close by.

Lastly, look for frass, which are basically excreta of termites appearing as small mounds of sawdust or wood fragments near the infested areas. This is a strong indication that termites are present.

Effective Subterranean Termite Treatments

Subterranean termites require proper approaches in treatments. One of the most effective treatments is liquid termiticide at the base of your property’s foundations. This establishes a chemical barrier that does not allow for the movement of termites into that area or kills them on contact.

For a more gradual attack, bait systems are very effective. Bait stations are located throughout a property that lure in the termites with treated bait that is taken back to their colony. This gradually eliminates the colony from within.

Another option is borate treatments, where a solution of borate is applied to the wood in your home so as to repel termites and also prevent further destruction. It is best suited for areas, which are hard to reach; it can be used as a precautionary measure at the construction site.

Localized termite infestations, on the other hand, have an environment-friendly heat treatment that heats up specific areas to levels lethal for termites hence eliminating the problem without using chemicals and ideal for addressable hidden nests.
